PhD in Quantum Engineering of Semiconductor Nanostructures for Photovoltaics

PhD opportunity at the Institute for Optoelectronic Systems and Microtechnology (ISOM-UPM), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, in Quantum Engineering of Semiconductor Nanostructures for Photovoltaics . The position is part of the ERC Consolidator Grant project Quantum-engineered lattice-matched III-V-on-Si multijunction solar cells (MIRACLE) . The research focuses on quantum-engineered, lattice-matched III-V-on-Si multijunction solar cells using dilute-nitride short-period superlattices fabricated by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) with atomic-layer control. The PhD work will include MBE growth of III-V semiconductor materials and nanostructures, structural/optical/electronic characterization, and fabrication and characterization of solar cells. The project offers opportunities to collaborate with leading international research groups in a large, international environment with senior researchers, postdoctoral researchers, and PhD students. Eligibility highlights: candidates must be under 30 years old at recruitment, be unemployed until the day before recruitment, and hold both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in a field related to Physics, Materials Engineering, or Electronic Engineering. For foreign degrees requiring recognition in Spain, official homologation must be completed by recruitment time. Residence in the Community of Madrid is not required. Funding: the PhD is directly funded by the project, so no separate PhD scholarship is needed. Application: send your CV, motivation letter, and Bachelor's and Master's transcripts to [email protected]. Deadline: 1 December 2026. Expected start: late 2026 / early 2027.
