Fully Funded PhD in Reservoir Simulation, AI, and Geomechanics at University of Wyoming
Assistant Professor Shihao Wang at the University of Wyoming is seeking highly motivated PhD students to join his team. The opening is for a fully funded PhD position starting as early as Spring 2027.
The research sits at the intersection of advanced reservoir simulation, artificial intelligence, and geomechanics. Students may work on advanced reservoir simulation, including multiphysics modeling, coupled hydro-mechanical modeling, and flow behavior in unconventional and geothermal reservoirs; scientific machine learning (SciML), including data-driven and physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), surrogate modeling, and history matching for subsurface energy systems; or geomechanics, including modeling of geomechanics and hydraulic fracturing for reservoir engineering applications.
Funding includes a competitive stipend, full tuition waiver, and health insurance. The post explicitly describes the positions as fully funded.
Eligible applicants should have a B.S. or M.S. in Petroleum Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field. A strong background in mathematics or physics is important. Programming ability in Python, C++, Fortran, or MATLAB is expected. Prior research experience in reservoir simulation, machine learning, geomechanics, or molecular dynamics simulation is preferred. An M.S. is not required, though it is preferred.
