The University of Lisbon’s School of Arts and Humanities is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship in Linguistics or related areas, supported by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia. The scholarship is hosted at the Center of Linguistics and involves research within one of two main projects: (i) a brain oscillations approach to early prosodic development, focusing on how brain rhythms map the development of prosodic structure, or (ii) the link between perception and production in typical and atypical language development, examining how this connection emerges in the first year of life. The successful candidate will join the Labfon group, specifically the Lisbon Baby Lab, and will be responsible for data collection using EEG, ultrasound, and eye-tracking, as well as data analysis and dissemination of findings. The research environment is interdisciplinary, with opportunities for co-supervision and collaboration with researchers from other institutions. The scholarship is awarded for 12 months and may be renewed up to a maximum of 48 months, depending on project eligibility. The monthly stipend is €1,359.64, with insurance and tuition/registration fees included up to a pre-established limit. The fellowship is exclusive of any other professional or research activity. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Linguistics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Biomedical Engineering, Neurosciences, or related fields, and must be eligible to enroll in a relevant PhD program at the University of Lisbon. Good command of English and experience in data treatment and statistical analysis are required. Applicants must reside in Portugal at the start of the fellowship. One postdoctoral scholarship is available at the Center of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon , within the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon , for work linked to the project Margins2Models – From Margins to Models: Creating a Platform for Culturally-Aware Generative AI in Low-Resource Languages . The scholarship is designed for a researcher with a strong background in computational linguistics , computer science , or related engineering areas, and it offers the opportunity to contribute to a highly interdisciplinary project at the intersection of language technologies, AI, and cultural heritage. The appointed scholar will work across the project’s work packages and deliverables, in close alignment with consortium partners. Activities include multimodal data acquisition , database curation and licensing, multilingual model development and protocols, evaluation of cultural and linguistic bias, ethical frameworks, multicultural knowledge integration, scalable AI infrastructure for cultural heritage, and project dissemination. This makes the position especially relevant for candidates interested in language technology, responsible AI, low-resource language processing, and data-centric computational research. The fellowship is scientifically supervised by Professor Helena Moniz and Professor Fernando Batista , with the project coordinated by Professor Sónia Frota . The research will be carried out at the Center of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon in Lisbon, Portugal. The post is a full-time research grant contract, with a duration of 12 months and possible renewal up to a maximum of 36 months , subject to project eligibility and performance. Funding is provided through the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation of Hungary . The stipend follows the Portuguese FCT scale and is stated as €1901 per month , paid by bank transfer. The host institution also supports personal accident insurance and, where applicable, voluntary social insurance. Acceptance of the fellowship is exclusive of any other professional or research activity. Eligibility is limited to applicants holding a PhD in Language Sciences, Computer Science, or Engineering , with the doctorate awarded within the previous three years. Applicants must reside permanently and habitually in Portugal at the start date. Candidates must not have carried out their doctoral research at the Center of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon unless most of that research was undertaken elsewhere.
