PhD Position in AI-Enabled Marine Biological Monitoring (COD-SPAWN Project)

The Department of Biological Sciences Ålesund at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position in AI-enabled marine biological monitoring, as part of the COD-SPAWN project. This interdisciplinary project is funded by NTNU's Ocean and Coast strategic research area and aims to develop advanced sensor technologies and autonomous monitoring systems for marine environments, with a focus on sustainable coastal and fjord ecosystems. COD-SPAWN integrates cutting-edge sensing, robotics, and artificial intelligence to enable continuous, high-resolution monitoring of environmental conditions and biological processes. The project has successfully validated sensor technology in laboratory settings and will now adapt it for marine deployment and in situ analyses. Borgundfjorden, near Ålesund, serves as a living laboratory and demonstration site, with particular emphasis on Atlantic cod spawning dynamics. The project involves extensive fieldwork, including water sampling, machine vision-based plankton and particle imaging, genetic analyses, and campaigns to generate data series on cod spawning, zooplankton, and water quality. The PhD research can be tailored to the candidate’s interests, allowing specialization in biology/ecology, modelling, or machine learning applications. The candidate will collaborate with experts in marine biology, environmental monitoring, ocean engineering, robotics, cybernetics, and data science. The core team includes two PhD researchers and two postdoctoral researchers, offering a vibrant, cross-disciplinary environment. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in natural sciences (marine biology, fisheries biology, biological oceanography, marine environmental sciences, or related fields). Candidates with backgrounds in marine technology or computer science with relevant biological experience are also considered. The degree must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at master's level. Master's students may apply if the degree is completed by September 2026. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's grading scale. Fluency in English (written and spoken) is mandatory. Preferred criteria include interest in new technologies, object recognition, knowledge of Norwegian or other Scandinavian language, driving license (class B/BE), boat driving license, and experience with work at sea. Personal qualities such as independence, structured work, motivation, and adaptability are emphasized. The position offers a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum, with a 2% statutory pension fund deduction, and is a 3-year fixed term.
