PhD Position: The Impact of Adult Education on Young Adults in Second-Chance Education

The Work and Organizational Psychology and Educational Sciences (O2L) research unit at KU Leuven is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to investigate the impact of adult education on young adults in second-chance education (TKO) at Centres for Adult Education (CVO) in Flanders. This project is situated within the domain of Professional Training & Development & Lifelong Learning, focusing on both the mental well-being of young adults in TKO and interventions that support teachers and pedagogical services in these programmes. As a doctoral researcher, you will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team, collaborating closely with participating CVOs across Flanders and contributing to the development of learning networks. The research will employ both quantitative (e.g., survey research, administrative data) and qualitative (e.g., interviews, focus groups) methods. You will also provide limited teaching support, such as supervising project work and handling administrative tasks. The position is supervised by Prof. Dr. Sofie Cabus and offers a full-time doctoral scholarship for four years, contingent on a positive evaluation after the first year. The working environment is international, flexible, and supportive, with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. Applicants should hold (or be about to obtain) a Master’s degree in Psychology, Educational Sciences, Economics and Business, Social Sciences, or a related field, with excellent academic results. Affinity with adult education, lifelong learning, and both quantitative and qualitative research methods is essential. The ability to conduct learning networks in Dutch and a good command of English are required. Strong organizational, writing, and communication skills are valued, as is the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, and at least one reference via the KU Leuven online application tool by 25 May 2026. After initial screening, selected candidates will be invited for interviews, including a short presentation on the PhD topic. For further information, contact Prof. Dr. Sofie Cabus at [email protected]. KU Leuven is committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment, embracing diversity as an asset and ensuring equal opportunities for all applicants.
