Emerging Viruses
This postdoctoral researcher position is offered within the Research Unit 'Emerging Viruses' at the Leibniz Institute for Virology, led by Professor Stephanie Pfänder. The group focuses on understanding the complex interactions between emerging RNA viruses—such as coronaviruses and flaviviruses—and their hosts, with the aim of improving pandemic preparedness and developing innovative antiviral strategies. The project involves studying virus-host interactions using advanced cellular models, including primary cell models and organoids, and applying cutting-edge cellular biology techniques. The research is highly relevant given the challenges highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the unpredictability of emerging pathogens and the limitations of current vaccines and antiviral therapies. The position is based in Hamburg, Germany, and offers a collaborative, international research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities. The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field (virology, immunology, molecular and cell biology), a strong publication record, and extensive experience in cell culture and molecular biology. Experience with RNA-based methods, non-coding RNAs, positive strand viruses (especially coronaviruses and flaviviruses at BSL3 level), and organoids is advantageous. The role includes supervising students and requires excellent communication, organizational, and teamwork skills, as well as fluency in English. The position is initially for two years, with the possibility of extension, and comes with a competitive salary (EG 13 TV-AVH), pension scheme, generous vacation, training opportunities, childcare and health protection grants, flexible working hours, and other benefits. Applications are accepted until the position is filled. Interested candidates should submit a motivation letter, CV, publication list, and references via the online application portal.
