PhD Student in Administrative Law – Legal Geography of the Franco-Belgian Border Region

Hasselt University invites applications for a full-time PhD position in administrative law, focusing on the legal, political, and geographical dynamics of the Franco-Belgian border region. As a doctoral researcher, you will join an interdisciplinary and international team within the CORe (Centre for Government and Law) research group, contributing to a project that explores the intersection of law, geography, and politics in border contexts. The research will culminate in an English-language PhD dissertation in legal geography, with the specific topic determined in consultation with your supervisor, Prof. Dr. Steven Van Garsse, and co-supervisors Prof. Dr. Bernard Reitel (Université d’Artois) and Prof. Dr. Fabienne Leloup (Université Catholique de Louvain – Mons). Your responsibilities will include conducting in-depth legal and comparative research, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and participating in international scientific meetings. The position also involves limited teaching and support tasks, such as supervising student groups and participating in university events. You will have opportunities for research stays at partner institutions and for international mobility, fostering collaboration with policy actors and academic peers across Europe. The CORe research group is dedicated to high-quality, multidisciplinary research on the relationship between citizens and government, with a strong emphasis on resilience and sustainability. The group values intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and societal relevance, and offers a stimulating academic environment with about 15 professors and 40 doctoral researchers. The university’s city campus, located in the renovated Old Prison near Dusartplein, provides modern facilities and is easily accessible by public transport. The position offers a doctoral scholarship for two years, renewable once upon positive evaluation, as well as a workplace, IT equipment, and a budget for attending scientific conferences. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Law or equivalent, with a dual degree in European Studies or Political Science considered an asset. Excellent academic results, strong analytical and organizational skills, and proficiency in English and French are required. The selection process includes a preselection based on the application file and an interview conducted in English. For more information and to apply, visit the Hasselt University vacancies portal. The application deadline is 9 February 2026.
