The School of Law and Social Sciences at Aston University is offering a fully funded PhD studentship to investigate the impact of English language proficiency on the daily lives of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. This interdisciplinary project, supervised by Dr Gaja Maestri and Professor Sue Garton, sits at the intersection of Sociology and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The research aims to explore how English proficiency facilitates or hinders the integration of refugees and asylum seekers, especially in light of recent policy changes increasing the required English level for indefinite leave to remain. The project will employ a qualitative case study approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews and participant observation to understand the real-world experiences of refugees and asylum seekers as they navigate daily life in English. The findings are expected to inform what level of English is necessary for successful community participation and to identify the most effective forms of language support for these groups. The studentship covers all tuition fees and provides an annual stipend. However, candidates are responsible for relocation and campus visit costs. International students must ensure they can meet UK visa, travel, and NHS Surcharge requirements. The position is based at Aston University's Birmingham campus, with regular in-person attendance expected. Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a First or Upper Second Class Honours undergraduate degree and a Masters degree with Merit or Distinction in a relevant field. Experience with English as an Additional Language, volunteering in the charity sector, and qualitative research methods is desirable.
