Fully Funded PhD in Fibre-Based Sustainable Food Packaging at Technological University Dublin

Technological University Dublin is advertising a fully funded PhD in fibre-based sustainable food packaging within the School of Food Science and Environmental Health. The project is part of a DAFM-supported collaboration involving Technological University Dublin , Teagasc Ashtown Food Research Centre , and University College Cork . The research focuses on developing compostable, fibre-based packaging to extend the shelf life of food products, with work spanning development, characterisation, validation, and sustainability assessment of biopolymer-based and fibre-based packaging systems using renewable resources. Ideal candidates should have a background in biomaterials science , polymer chemistry , chemistry , food packaging , or a closely related field. The post highlights practical laboratory experience, packaging performance testing, analytical methods (including FTIR, UV-Vis, DSC/TGA, rheology, microscopy, and barrier testing), statistical analysis, and life cycle assessment tools such as SimaPro or OpenLCA. Strong scientific writing, communication, teamwork, and the ability to present research findings are also important. Funding is substantial: a €25,000 annual stipend , fees covered up to €5,500 per year , and a €10,000 annual materials and travel budget for 48 months . The application deadline is 16 June 2026 .
