PhD and Postdoc Positions in Indo-European Studies at University of Copenhagen

The University of Copenhagen is offering both a PhD position (36 months) and a postdoc position (20 months) within the research project “The Indo-European Dark Ages Illuminated.” This project, based at the Department of Nordic Studies and Roots of Europe, is led by Professor Thomas Olander and funded by VELUX FONDEN. The research focuses on the millennia following 4000 BCE, a period that saw significant linguistic, cultural, and genetic changes across Europe and western Asia. Central to the project is the study of Proto-Indo-European, the ancestor of many modern languages, and the analysis of culture-specific vocabulary to reconstruct prehistoric language stages. The project is inherently cross-disciplinary, combining historical linguistics, archaeology, and prehistoric genetics to shed light on the formative periods of European and Asian prehistory. Candidates will have the opportunity to work in a vibrant research environment, collaborating with experts in linguistics, anthropology, and archaeology. The positions are ideal for those interested in language evolution, cultural migrations, and the intersection of linguistic and archaeological evidence. Applicants should have a background in linguistics, anthropology, archaeology, or related fields, and demonstrate a strong interest in Indo-European studies and interdisciplinary research. The announcement does not specify detailed eligibility criteria such as language proficiency or GPA, nor does it provide exact funding amounts or tuition coverage. However, the project is fully funded by VELUX FONDEN, ensuring financial support for the duration of the positions. For more information and application instructions, candidates are encouraged to visit the Roots of Europe project page and the Department of Nordic Studies at the University of Copenhagen. Contact details and further links are provided in the announcement.
