The Department of Social Sciences and Business (ISE) at Roskilde University is offering a fully funded PhD position as part of the NordForsk-funded SustainCare project. This international research initiative, led by Professor Tine Rostgaard, aims to develop sustainable, equitable, and community-based long-term care (LTC) systems for older people across Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Lithuania. The project investigates the intersection of formal and informal care, the emergence of inequalities in care access and outcomes, and the potential of community-based solutions such as Community Circles/Fællesskabscirkler to reshape care practices and policies. The PhD fellow will contribute to the SustainCare project by formulating an independent research project aligned with the project's framework, focusing on the dynamics of older people’s care needs, care provision, and policy development. Comparative research across at least two, preferably all four, countries is encouraged, utilizing both qualitative (e.g., interviews, policy document analysis) and quantitative (e.g., survey analysis, regression) methods. The position offers the opportunity to work closely with an interdisciplinary and international team, sharing research protocols and analysis, and contributing to comparative and interdisciplinary analysis. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Doctoral School of Social Sciences and Business, joining a vibrant community of approximately 47 PhD fellows from around the world. The program provides interdisciplinary training, professional development seminars, and opportunities for feedback and social engagement. The PhD fellow will be associated with the research area of care and welfare and may participate in the Velci - Changing Societies: Welfare and Diversity research group. Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent in social sciences (sociology, political science, anthropology, economics, international development studies, or global and development studies). Required qualifications include experience with qualitative methods and at least training in quantitative methods. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral, are essential. Roskilde University is advertising a fully funded three-year PhD position in the new SIRPA project: Social Imaginaries and Realisations of Place-based Communities in Ageing Societies . The position is based in the Department of Social Sciences and Business and starts from 1 February 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. The PhD will examine major questions about welfare state transformation , governance , inequality , boundary-making , and the role of community-based support in ageing societies. The project is a research-practice collaboration between Roskilde University , VIVE — The Danish Center for Social Science Research , and Hørsholm Municipality , and it studies Community Circles (Fællesskabscirkler), which are place-based, citizen-driven neighbourhood communities offering practical help, social contact, and light everyday support. The PhD project should be connected to SIRPA while making an original scholarly contribution. Relevant topics include social imaginaries, policy discourses, governance rationales, the negotiation of roles and responsibilities between municipalities, care workers, volunteers and citizens, inclusion/exclusion, unequal participation, and the relationship between citizen-led support and formal long-term care. The project is qualitative and may use policy documents, interviews, focus groups, rapid ethnography, and research-practice workshops. Applicants must hold a relevant master’s degree or equivalent in a social science discipline such as sociology, political science, public administration, anthropology, social policy, human geography, or social work. The university particularly seeks candidates with strong qualitative research skills, a theoretically ambitious and feasible project idea, excellent English, and proficiency in Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish for fieldwork and collaboration.
