Fully Funded PhD Studentships in Earth, Environmental Science, and Exascale Computing (ExaGEO DLA)
The ExaGEO Doctoral Landscape Award (DLA) offers fully funded PhD studentships for September 2026 entry, focusing on tackling global challenges in Earth and Environmental Sciences through state-of-the-art modelling and exascale computing. The program is a partnership between the University of Glasgow (lead institution), University of Edinburgh, and Lancaster University, allowing students to undertake research projects at any of these institutions. The research areas span earth science, environmental science, sustainability, climate change, and high-performance computing, with a strong emphasis on GPU programming and advanced modelling techniques.
Students will benefit from cohort-based learning, interdisciplinary supervisory teams, and a wide range of training opportunities, including workshops, retreats, summer schools, and outreach events. The program provides both tuition fees and a generous tax-free stipend, with additional support for research-related expenses such as equipment, conference attendance, and training events. Both UK and international applicants are eligible for fully funded studentships, with partner institutions waiving the difference in tuition fees for international students.
Eligibility requires a UK first-class or upper second-class (2:1) honours undergraduate degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. Prior programming experience is strongly recommended, and English language proficiency may be required for non-native speakers. Applicants must submit a CV, application statement, transcripts, references, and complete an EDI survey. International applicants must also provide a signed supervisor support form and may need ATAS clearance and meet visa requirements.
Applications must be submitted via the University of Glasgow’s online application system by 9 January 2026. The selection process includes shortlisting, interviews, and final offers, with studentships typically lasting 3.5 years and the possibility of extension to 4 years for those completing internships or placements. The program is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) under UKRI, aiming to train the next generation of researchers in technical and professional skills applicable to diverse careers in earth and environmental sciences.
