PhD Scholarships in Agricultural Robots and Software for Sustainable Farming

The University of Southern Denmark is offering three fully funded PhD positions at the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute (MMMI) in Odense, as part of the Robotic Intercropping project. This initiative, supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, aims to revolutionize sustainable agriculture through the development and deployment of autonomous agricultural robots and digital twins. The project addresses the challenges of monoculture farming by promoting biodiversity, healthier soils, and reduced reliance on insecticides, aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. As a PhD student, you will join a collaborative team of researchers from Denmark and the Netherlands, working at the forefront of robotics, AI, and agroecology. The three available PhD topics are: (1) Multi-Robot Systems (MRS), focusing on swarm robotics and field navigation using digital twin data; (2) Robotic Implements, involving the design and integration of crop management tools on stationary and mobile platforms; and (3) Digital Twins, developing dynamic models of crop growth and competition to guide robotic interventions. The research is highly interdisciplinary, integrating robotics, software engineering, sensor technologies, and plant science. You will participate in experimental validation, field testing, and dissemination of results through publications and presentations. The positions offer a competitive monthly salary of 36,138 DKK (including pension), with potential for higher pay based on experience. Applicants must hold a master’s degree in a relevant field and demonstrate skills in robotics, software, mechanical/electrical engineering, and simulation tools. The application process requires submission of a motivated application, CV, degree certificates, transcripts, and other supporting documents in English and PDF format. The deadline for applications is December 8, 2025. The University of Southern Denmark values diversity and encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply. Successful candidates will benefit from a vibrant research environment, opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, and the chance to contribute to a more sustainable future in agriculture.
