Doctoral Researcher / Project Researcher in Mathematics
for a fixed-term position within the Research Council of Finland funded project
Rubin's theorem for subshifts
(running 1.9.2026–31.12.2030).
The project sits at the intersection of
discrete-time dynamical systems
,
geometric group theory
,
topology
,
logic
, and
computability
. The research theme explores how the automorphism group of a complex subshift can reflect the underlying dynamical structure, with possible directions including subgroups of the automorphism group of the full shift
A^Z
and related one-dimensional reversible cellular automata.
The position is tailored to the selected candidate’s background and interests. It is suitable for a motivated early-career researcher aiming to work toward a doctoral degree in a strong research environment in Turku, Finland. If the selected candidate does not yet have doctoral study rights at the University of Turku, the initial title will be
Project Researcher
, with doctoral study rights to be applied for in the next available call. If the candidate is close to graduation, an initial contract may be made as a
research assistant
until the degree is completed and doctoral study rights can be sought.
Eligibility highlights include an MSc or equivalent degree in mathematics or a related field, the ability to conduct independent research, strong motivation, and good English skills. Helpful prior knowledge includes one or more of the following: dynamical systems, geometric group theory, infinite groups, point-set topology, first-order logic, or computability.
The salary is based on the University of Turku pay system and is approximately
€2,500–€2,800/month
for a doctoral researcher/project researcher, or
€2,300–€2,450/month
for a research assistant, depending on qualification and experience. A six-month trial period applies.
