PhD in Structural Health Monitoring and Condition Assessment at Aalto University

PhD opportunity at Aalto University in Structural Health Monitoring and Condition Assessment , hosted by the Structural and Bridge Engineering Research Group in the Department of Civil Engineering. The project sits at the intersection of civil engineering , sensing technologies , signal processing , machine learning , and data-driven modelling , with a strong focus on bridges and other infrastructure systems. The doctoral researcher will work on methods for monitoring, assessing, and managing civil infrastructure using direct and indirect sensing, remote sensing techniques, finite element analysis, laboratory and field-based structural testing, data acquisition, damage detection, and software/application development for structural assessment. The role includes research, publication, teaching-related duties, participation in group activities, and collaboration with industry and public-sector stakeholders. Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree with excellent academic performance in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field; strong interest or experience in structural testing, SHM, sensing systems, signal processing, data analysis, and machine learning; excellent English communication skills; Finnish is an advantage. Applicants must satisfy Aalto’s Doctoral Programme in Engineering criteria. Final-year master’s students may apply if graduation timing is clearly stated, but the degree must be completed before the PhD contract starts. Funding and terms: this is a paid doctoral researcher position. The starting salary is 3143 €/month gross , with increases over time.
