Fully Funded PhD Positions in Urban Water Systems, AI, and Machine Learning at Florida International University

Florida International University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is advertising two fully funded PhD positions in Urban Water Systems , Artificial Intelligence , and Machine Learning . The students will join the WISE Research Group and work on NSF-funded projects related to combined sewer overflows (CSOs) , sewer system modeling, and real-time control/forecasting. The research combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD) , the Illinois Transient Model (ITM) , PySWMM , open-source hydraulic modeling, and AI/ML methods for predicting and mitigating sewer overflows. Relevant research themes include urban water systems, civil engineering, environmental engineering, hydraulic modeling, anomaly detection, sensor placement, physics-based AI, and data-driven optimization. The project description also mentions lab-scale overflow experiments and field-scale validation in real sewer systems. Eligibility highlights: applicants should have strong programming skills, especially in Python and C++ ; familiarity with open-source modeling tools is expected; experience with machine learning/AI is required; and some experience with fluid laboratory experiments is also required. Highly motivated candidates with strong research backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The positions start in Spring 2027 or Fall 2027 . No application deadline is stated in the post. Interested candidates should email a CV and a PDF of their most relevant publication to the PI’s email address. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for a Skype interview. Institution: Florida International University , Miami, Florida, USA.
