About this position

13 fully funded PhD studentships are available at the Medical University of Vienna through its recurring international call across 18 doctoral programmes. The positions span a wide interdisciplinary research environment linking clinical, experimental, and computational approaches to medical problems, with projects in AI/ML, bioinformatics, medical imaging, immunology, neuroscience, endocrinology and metabolism, and vascular biology.

These PhD opportunities are designed for early-stage researchers who want to develop an original project in a supportive doctoral school environment. The programme offers structured training, supervision from experienced researchers, and the chance to build both specialist and transferable skills. Successful candidates will work in a setting that supports academic careers, clinical research, and industry pathways.

The advertised projects include themes such as genetic endotypes of ME/CFS, ML algorithms for arthritis imaging, AI-powered 3D whole-body metabolic imaging, model-based reinforcement learning for mechanical ventilation, multi-omics projects in immunology and ARDS, CAR T-cell and regulatory T-cell engineering, epigenetic reprogramming of inflammatory diseases, neuronal differentiation, MC4R signalling in hepatic lipid metabolism, and several vascular biology projects including thrombosis, skull hematopoiesis, clonal hematopoiesis, and platelet dysfunction.

The call is open to applicants from medicine, life sciences, computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, and related disciplines. Medical graduates can also pursue a research pathway alongside clinical careers. The university highlights a competitive salary, cutting-edge facilities, mentoring, and an international research community. There are no tuition fees for regular study times.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold, or expect to complete within six months, a relevant master’s degree or equivalent; strong academic performance and prior research experience are advantageous; and English at C1 level is required. At least two reference letters must be uploaded in the system before submission. Applicants may select up to three preferred PhD projects.

Application deadline: 22 November 2026, 23:55 Vienna time. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed online in mid-December 2026, followed by final in-person interviews in Vienna at the end of January 2027. Selected candidates are expected to start on 1 March 2027.

Institution: Medical University of Vienna, Spitalgasse 23, Vienna, Austria.
