About this position

The Black in Plant Science (BiPS) Summer Studentship 2026 offers Black undergraduate students in the UK a unique opportunity to gain paid research experience in plant science. Supported by the Gatsby Foundation, this program aims to address the underrepresentation of Black researchers in the UK plant science community by providing funding for summer placements at UK universities or research institutions. Students can choose to work in one of several host labs, including those led by Catherine Kidner, Gwendolyn Kirschner, Carolina Grandellis, Oluwadamilola Racheal Okeyoyin, or Lucas Frungillo, or propose a lab of their choice with prior agreement from the supervisor.

Successful applicants will receive a stipend of £504.38 per week for up to 6 weeks, join a supportive community of plant scientists, and be invited to present their work at the annual Black in Plant Science UK conference. The program is open to Black or Black heritage students in the middle years of a science degree at a UK university, with eligibility extended to those with home status or EU/international students who have the right to work in the UK.

Applicants must submit an online application form, including a CV and covering letter. If applying to a specific lab, a letter of support from the lab head is required. The deadline for applications is 30 March 2026. For more information or queries, contact [email protected].

This initiative is proudly supported by the Gatsby Foundation and aims to foster diversity, inclusion, and excellence in plant science research across the UK.
