About this position
The University of Antwerp is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship in machine learning and systems modelling for advanced air–liquid interface (ALI) cell culture models. The position is based across the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Department of Electronics-ICT, bringing together expertise from pharmaceutical sciences, biomedicine, engineering, and computational methods.
The project develops a digital twin framework for ALI bronchial epithelial cell cultures. These cultures are used to investigate human–pathogen interactions and epithelial barrier function in disease contexts such as COPD and cystic fibrosis. The digital twin will combine real-time imaging and sensor data with machine learning to track culture progression, including expansion and differentiation, and to support data-driven interventions that improve robustness and reproducibility in ALI experiments.
The doctoral researcher will work toward the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis, publish scientific articles, contribute to grant proposals, and present research at national and international workshops and conferences. The role also includes a limited amount of teaching and research support tasks.
Applicants should have, or be close to completing, a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biophysics, Engineering Sciences, or Computer Science. Strong interest in machine learning, systems modelling, and cell culture work is expected, together with excellent academic results and strong collaborative, creative, and integrity-driven research qualities.
The scholarship is awarded for two years and may be renewed for two additional years after a positive evaluation. The university indicates that the candidate is expected to actively seek independent funding and will be fully supported in applying for personal fellowships, including FWO. Benefits include ecocheques, an internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs.
The planned start date is 1 November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The application deadline is 20 August 2026 at midnight Brussels time. Applications must be submitted through the University of Antwerp online platform and include a motivation letter, academic CV, and contact details for two referees.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
How to apply
Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
