About this position

Fully funded PhD scholarship opportunity at the University of Glasgow for the ERC project MORTALMED (“Mortal Medicine: The Social Life of a Death-Inducing Pharmaceutical”). The project is centered on the social life of pentobarbital and its use in assisted dying, lethal injection, and animal euthanasia.

This PhD is especially relevant for applicants interested in medical anthropology, sociology, ethnography, death studies, pharmaceuticals, and interdisciplinary qualitative research. The project methods include ethnography, participant observation, interviews, archival research, and media/discourse analysis. Research is primarily conducted in Switzerland, the United States, and Mexico.

Applicants are encouraged to design their own original PhD research project aligned with the broader goals of MORTALMED. The scholarship is for a 4-year PhD starting in October 2026.

Funding includes an annual UKRI stipend, Home tuition fees, and a Research Training Support Grant of up to £940 per year. This opportunity is only open to applicants who qualify for UK Home fee status; EU and international students are not eligible.

To apply, submit an application for the PhD in Sociology, list Dr. Marcos Freire de Andrade Neves as supervisor, use “Mortal Medicine” as the project title, and select “ERC MORTALMED PhD Scholarship” in the funding section. Required documents include a research proposal, degree transcripts and certificates, CV, and two references (one academic).

Deadline: 14 August 2026.
