About this position
PhD studentship with an integrated Masters year at the University of Essex in the United Kingdom.
This opportunity is part of the Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme and is designed for applicants interested in sustainability, environmental science, and life sciences, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research. The successful applicant will first complete a funded Masters degree, specifically MSc Biotechnology, commencing in January 2027, and then progress to the PhD phase.
Applicants are invited to propose a research project in the broad area of environment and sustainability as it relates to the life sciences. The proposal should be up to 1000 words and should identify one additional discipline to integrate into the research: Law, Government/Political Science, Business, or Sociology. No prior knowledge of the secondary discipline is required, as training will be provided.
This is a fully funded studentship. Funding includes home tuition fee coverage, an annual UKRI-level stipend (£21,805 for 2026-27), and a £10,000 research allowance for approved research costs such as supplies, equipment, and fieldwork. During the PhD, scholars also receive access to training support, including Proficio funding and the Sustainable Transitions training programme.
Eligibility is restricted to UK domiciled applicants who do not already hold a Masters degree. Applicants must also meet at least one of the following criteria: be from a low-income household background (for example, having received a full maintenance loan or Special Support loan during undergraduate study) and/or belong to one of the listed ethnicity categories specified in the call.
The deadline is 14 September 2026 at 11:59 pm BST. Apply via the linked jobs.ac.uk posting and submit the required proposal before the closing date.
