About this position
PhD opportunity in Climate Displacement in Australia at Monash University. This fully funded doctoral scholarship is part of an ARC-funded project, Addressing long-term climate displacement in Australia, led by Dr Colette Mortreux in the School of Social Sciences.
The project examines the lived experiences and impacts of displacement linked to climate-related disasters such as flooding and bushfires. The research will explore how displacement affects wellbeing, financial security, and social participation, and how these experiences intersect with policy and institutional practices. The broader aim is to identify ways to improve how Australia anticipates and manages climate displacement in the future.
This opportunity is especially relevant for candidates interested in human geography, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, mobility, and qualitative social science research with policy relevance. The successful applicant will be based at Monash University’s Clayton campus in Melbourne and will join a supportive research environment with expertise across geography, sociology, politics, and sustainability transitions.
Funding includes a tax-free Research Living Allowance of AUD 37,145 per annum at the 2026 full-time rate, indexed, plus a tuition fee scholarship and Single Overseas Health Cover for eligible international awardees. The project also provides support for fieldwork, transcription, travel, and conference attendance.
Eligibility highlights include an excellent academic record in Human Geography or a cognate social science discipline, preferably an Australian or equivalent international Honours or Master’s degree with a significant research component and first-class honours/H1. Applicants must meet Monash PhD and English-language requirements, be enrolled full-time and on campus, and must not already hold a PhD.
Before applying, candidates must discuss their research proposal with Dr Colette Mortreux. Applications close on 2 August 2026 at 11:55 pm AEST and must be submitted through Monash’s My.App portal with the required documents.
