About this position

Fully funded PhD opportunity at Southern Cross University in collaboration with CSIRO as part of an ARC Linkage Project titled “From Red Mud to Green Crops: Using Bauxsol to Create Novel Phosphate Fertiliser.”

The project sits at the intersection of environmental geochemistry, mineralogy, wastewater treatment, and sustainable agriculture. The research focuses on recovering phosphorus from wastewater and recycling it into valuable slow-release fertilisers, supporting circular economy approaches and sustainable resource recovery.

The supervisory team includes Prof. Ed Burton (Principal Supervisor, SCU), Dr. Niloofar (Nilo) Karimian (CSIRO), Prof. Andrew Rose (SCU), and Prof. Terry Rose (SCU). The successful candidate will have access to world-class analytical facilities at Southern Cross University and CSIRO Mineral Resources, with opportunities to use advanced mineralogical, geochemical, and synchrotron-based techniques.

This is a fully funded RTP PhD scholarship for 3 years and 3 months. Suitable backgrounds include geochemistry, mineralogy, soil science, water chemistry, environmental science, and environmental engineering.

Applications are open until the position is filled. Interested candidates should prepare to apply promptly through the relevant university or project contact pathway.
