About this position

Technical University of Munich (TUM), in collaboration with Imperial College London, is advertising a fully funded PhD position in environmental microbiology and the lung microbiome.

The project, NANOMICO – Decoding Nanoparticle–Epithelium–Microbiome Interactions in the Human Lung in Early-life, investigates how inhaled nanoparticles affect microbial communities in the lung, tissue integrity, biofilm formation, metabolism, antibiotic resistance, and the integration of microbial and clinical data. The work is based in the TUM School of Life Sciences and includes the possibility of a research stay at Imperial College London.

This PhD is especially relevant for applicants interested in microbiology, bioinformatics, metagenomics, metabolomics, multi-omics, and antibiotic resistance. The post highlights access to sequencing, metagenomics, metabolomics, and bioinformatics platforms, along with support for international conferences and training.

Eligibility: applicants should hold a master's degree or equivalent in microbiology, environmental sciences, biotechnology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or a related discipline. Experience in molecular microbiology, microorganism cultivation, sequencing, metagenomics, bioinformatics, multi-omics, and antibiotic resistance research is preferred. Strong English skills and the ability to work in an international team are required.

Funding: the position is fully funded for 3 years, with a possible extension. Applications are reviewed continuously until the position is filled, so early submission is encouraged.

How to apply: send one PDF containing a motivation letter, CV, certificates and academic record, and contact details of two academic references to Prof. Dr. Michael Schloter at [email protected].
