About this position

Fully funded PhD position at the University of Copenhagen in the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, Faculty of Humanities.

The project is part of the ERC Consolidator Grant Before the Image: The Political Ontology of Images for Legal and Social Justice. The PhD research focuses on images, visual literacy, human rights, legal and social justice, and how images documenting violence, war crimes, and human rights violations are produced, interpreted, and taught through open-source investigation trainings.

The successful candidate will likely work with anthropology, psychology, sociology, human rights, and related fields. The project includes ethnographic fieldwork, interviews with trainers and participants, and a leading role in developing an interactive exhibition that studies how non-experts view images and how visual interpretation can be shaped through prompts and training.

Eligibility highlights: master’s-level qualifications related to the subject area; strong academic English; additional language skills are an advantage; experience with ethnography, interviewing, and ethically sensitive research is preferred; civil society experience is a plus. Applicants educated outside Denmark must meet Danish-equivalent degree requirements and may need an assessment by the Danish Research Agency.

Funding: one three-year fully funded PhD scholarship. No stipend amount is stated in the post.

Deadline: 27 May 2026 at 23:59 CEST.

How to apply: submit the application online via the official portal. Include a personal statement, CV, publication list if relevant, diplomas, transcripts, translations where required, and grading-scale documentation. Questions about the process can be directed to HR South; academic questions can be sent to the PhD coordinator or PI.
