About this position
PhD opportunity at Aston University in Birmingham, United Kingdom on medication optimisation, severe mental illness, peer support workers, realist research, qualitative interviewing, and co-design.
This fully funded PhD (3 years, full-time) is part of the TIMELINESS project and will explore how peer support workers (PSWs) can use lived experience to help people with severe mental illness make informed decisions about medication and support recovery. The project is delivered in partnership with Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, including the Trust’s Recovery College and pharmacy team, and involves patients, carers, PSWs, and healthcare professionals.
The research will use realist review and interview methods to understand what works, for whom, and in what circumstances, then co-design an outline training package for PSWs. The project is positioned as applied health services research with clear potential to influence NHS practice and future NIHR-funded work.
Funding: Home fees plus an annual stipend are covered. International applicants may apply, but they must pay the difference between Home and Overseas tuition fees each year and cover relocation, visa, flights, and NHS surcharge costs.
Eligibility: Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a relevant bachelor's degree with First Class or 2.1, or a relevant bachelor's degree with First Class or 2.1 plus a relevant master's degree with Merit or higher.
