About this position
Cardiff University’s School of Global Humanities is offering fully funded WGSSS (ESRC DTP) PhD studentships in the Politics, International Relations and Area Studies pathway, starting in October 2027.
This opportunity is especially relevant for students interested in language-based area studies, including research on Britain, Europe and its member states, African studies, China or Japan, nationalism and identity politics, justice and incarceration, multilingualism and social linguistics, international relations, security, and comparative politics.
The programme particularly welcomes projects requiring knowledge of, or willingness to learn, one of the major European languages, Chinese, or Japanese. Other languages may also be supported through Cardiff University’s Languages for All programme or hard language training.
Funding is comprehensive: tuition fees are covered, along with an annual tax-free living stipend at UKRI minimum rates (currently £21,805 for 2026-27 full-time) and access to a Research Training Support Grant. Both full-time and part-time study are available, and international students are eligible.
Applicants should normally hold qualifications or experience equivalent to a UK honours degree at first or upper second-class level, or a master’s degree. Non-traditional academic backgrounds are welcome, but applicants must meet UKRI eligibility requirements. The school recommends contacting a potential supervisor before applying to confirm supervisory fit and capacity.
Named contacts for general queries and supervisor availability are Dr Cristina Marinetti and Dr Nye Davies at Cardiff University. Applications must be submitted by email with the required documents by 11 December 2026.
