About this position
LUCAS KU Leuven is recruiting a PhD candidate for a four-year research project on the impact of cancer support centres (“inloophuizen”) for people affected by cancer.
The project is run by LUCAS, KU Leuven’s interdisciplinary centre of expertise in care and welfare, in collaboration with the Foundation against Cancer and the King Baudouin Foundation. The PhD research will examine the psychosocial and societal impact of cancer support centres through a longitudinal research design.
The successful candidate will study outcomes such as psychosocial well-being, quality of life, coping, social connectedness, reintegration, and healthcare utilisation. The project also investigates which characteristics of support centres and their modes of operation contribute to positive outcomes. The PhD researcher will work closely with a network of support centres across Belgium and will be responsible for data collection, analysis of longitudinal and qualitative data, scientific reporting, journal publications, conference presentations, and translating findings into policy and practice recommendations.
Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in the social sciences, medical-social sciences, or a related discipline; an excellent academic record; solid quantitative research methods; and strong interest in healthcare and social welfare. Trilingual ability in Dutch, French, and English is required. Experience in scientific research and academic publishing is an asset, and affinity with cancer or chronic illness is also valued.
This is a fully funded PhD scholarship for up to four years, based at LUCAS KU Leuven in Leuven, Belgium. The anticipated start date is 1 January 2027. Application deadline: 31 August 2026.
