About this position

[Fully-funded PhD studentship; funding details are not otherwise specified in the posting.]

Fully-funded PhD Studentship: Single-cell Spatial Multi-omics for Cancer Biology at the University of Cambridge.

This project is hosted in the Wang Group, where the research focus is on interdisciplinary technologies that connect high-resolution spatial biology with genome-wide discovery. The lab integrates multi-omic sequencing and quantitative imaging to understand how molecular composition and subcellular organisation shape cell function, plasticity, and disease.

The PhD project centres on extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA), circular DNA elements that can drive oncogene amplification, intratumour heterogeneity, and therapeutic resistance in aggressive solid cancers. The student will develop and apply cutting-edge single-cell and spatial multi-omic approaches to link molecular signatures with cancer cell vulnerabilities, and to investigate how ecDNA is organised, regulated, and exploited in cancer.

The work sits at the interface of molecular biology, genomics, microscopy, optics, and computational analysis. The balance between method development, cancer biology, and data analysis can be shaped around the student’s strengths and interests. The group explicitly welcomes applicants from physical-sciences or computational backgrounds, as well as biologists who want training in optics and coding.

Applicants should hold, or expect to gain, an undergraduate or Master's degree in biophysics, biology, physics, chemistry, bioengineering, physical chemistry, biomedical sciences, or a related field. Useful experience includes laboratory work in molecular or cell biology, fluorescence microscopy, next-generation sequencing, programming in Python/R/MATLAB, and image or sequencing data analysis.

The course start date is 1 October 2027. The application deadline is 16 October 2026. Apply through the University of Cambridge postgraduate application portal and select the October 2027 start date. References are requested separately through the application system.

Supervisor: Dr. Guiping Wang.

What's required

Applicants should hold, or expect to gain, an undergraduate or Master's degree in biophysics, biology, physics, chemistry, bioengineering, physical chemistry, biomedical sciences, or a related discipline. The project welcomes applicants from physical-sciences, computational, and biology backgrounds. Helpful experience includes mammalian cell culture, nucleic acid work, immunofluorescence staining, fluorescence microscopy, optics and instrument building, next-generation sequencing, programming in Python, R or MATLAB, and analysis of image or sequencing data. A previous research project, internship, or Master's thesis in a related area would be advantageous.

How to apply

Apply via the 'Apply' button on the University of Cambridge course page. Select start date October 2027 when prompted. Arrange for referees to submit references promptly after you complete the References section.
