About this position

Funded PhD opportunity at the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI), University of Queensland, for a project titled Causal and adaptive learning for agronomic decisions and knowledge exchange in sorghum.

This PhD is embedded in the GRDC-funded SorGain research program and focuses on how diverse agronomic evidence can support sorghum management decisions, and how recommendations are communicated, interpreted, and used by researchers, growers, and advisers.

Research themes and methods: sorghum agronomy, causal evidence frameworks, knowledge exchange, mixed-methods research, evidence synthesis, causal reasoning, qualitative interviewing, quantitative analysis, contribution analysis, process tracing, interviews, workshops, and observation of knowledge-exchange activities. The project will draw on field trials, crop models, Earth observation, farm records, meteorological and soil data, stakeholder evidence, and project decision records.

Eligibility: applicants with a background in agricultural science, agricultural extension, rural sociology, or a closely related discipline are encouraged to apply. Experience in mixed-methods research, evidence synthesis, causal reasoning, qualitative interviewing, or quantitative analysis is desirable. Familiarity with Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning (MERL) would also be beneficial.

Funding: fully funded PhD support including A$39,220 per annum tax-free at the 2026 rate (indexed annually), tuition fees, and Single Overseas Student Health Cover.

Location: QAAFI, UQ St Lucia, with domestic travel across Queensland and New South Wales.

Deadline: applications close 20 October 2026, with rolling review.

How to apply: read the full details and application instructions via the provided link. Direct project questions to Sudhir Yadav at [email protected].
