About this position

Funded PhD opportunity at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, focused on ultrasonic monitoring of phase-change materials. The project sits in the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences and is supervised by Dr Laura Cobus. It is part of an interdisciplinary effort to improve thermal energy storage and support sustainable energy management.

The research aims to develop an ultrasound sensing system that can monitor the solid/liquid content of phase-change materials inside sealed, opaque containers at high temperatures. The student will first build benchtop experiments using ultrasonic methods to study PCM behaviour through the melting point at ambient temperatures, then design and build experiments for high-temperature monitoring. This project is especially relevant to students interested in physics, materials science, acoustics, energy technologies, and experimental instrumentation.

This is a fully funded 3-year PhD scholarship. Funding includes a salary of NZD 32,650 per year, tuition fees, and an additional NZD 5,000 for research expenses across the degree. The student will join a young and dynamic team at UC and connect with the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, a national Centre of Research Excellence involving several universities across New Zealand.

Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree or equivalent in Physics or Engineering, meeting UC PhD entry criteria, basic understanding of acoustic wave propagation, good coding skills (Python/Matlab or similar preferred), and English proficiency for applicants from non-English-speaking countries.

Application deadline: 2026-10-27. The successful applicant must start the PhD by 2027-07-01 at the latest. Applications are submitted online via the link in the listing.
