About this position
The Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at King's College London is offering the Hans Rausing Doctoral Scholarship for PhD and Masters-level study in the history of science and/or technology. This prestigious scholarship is open to Home, EU, and Overseas applicants and provides full funding, including tuition and fees at any rate, a generous annual stipend of £22,780 (UKRI 2025/26), and a research allowance. The scholarship is available in two schemes: the 1+3 award (MA plus PhD) and the 3-year award (PhD only). Successful candidates will join a vibrant academic community at King's College London, engaging in advanced research at the intersection of science, technology, and history.
Applicants should demonstrate an outstanding academic record and research potential in the history of science and/or technology. For the 3-year PhD award, candidates must already hold a Master’s degree in History or a related humanities or social science field, with a strong history of science and technology component or relevant research experience. For the 1+3 award, candidates should apply to one of the History MA programmes, with progression to doctoral study conditional on satisfactory completion of the MA. Research projects focused solely on the history of medicine are not eligible, though projects in the life sciences and the history of technologies applied to medicine are considered. Exceptionally, projects overlapping the history of medicine and science/technology may be eligible; applicants should discuss suitability with a prospective supervisor.
To apply, candidates must submit a sample of written work, a personal statement (1-2 pages), and a research proposal (1,000-1,500 words for 1+3 applicants; around 2,000 words for 3-year PhD applicants) plus bibliography. There is no separate application form for the Hans Rausing Scholarship; applicants must apply to either a History MA programme or the History Research PhD programme via King's College London’s electronic application system. Applicants should indicate to their prospective supervisor their intention to be considered for the scholarship. The application deadline is 17 April 2026 (23:59 UK time). Awards will be announced by mid-May 2026.
The Hans Rausing Scholarship offers full tuition and fees, a monthly stipend equivalent to the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, and a research allowance. The Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine provides a supportive environment for interdisciplinary research, with opportunities to engage in seminars, workshops, and collaborative projects. Applicants are encouraged to contact a prospective supervisor at the Centre to discuss their research interests and proposal before submitting their application.
