The scholarship supports up to 5 new postgraduate researchers for full-time or part-time doctoral study, with awards lasting 3.5 years full-time (pro-rata for part-time). Funding includes full academic fees and a maintenance grant of £21,805 in Session 2026/27 for full-time study, with the stipend increasing annually in line with the UKRI rate.
Applicants must hold, or be in the final year of, an undergraduate degree equivalent to at least a UK First Class Honours degree. Applicants must be new PhD researchers and must not already hold a PhD or be currently registered for one.
The minimum English language requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component, or equivalent, though some schools/faculties may require higher scores. Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds while receiving the scholarship.
Applications are a two-stage process: first apply for a research programme of study and submit all required supporting documents by the scholarship deadline; then, after receiving a 9-digit Student Application ID, complete the online scholarship form.
Deadline: Tuesday 23 March 2027 at 17:00 UK time. Funding starts on 1 October 2027. The scholarship is available for research degree study across all Faculties, including linked project opportunities such as work on proteins and engineered biomolecular systems using high-speed AFM.
