About this position

FEUP (Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto) is offering 1 research grant within the H2SYMBIOTIC project, focused on multi-sector hydrogen integration for decarbonisation and circularity. The work is based at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering in Porto, Portugal, under the supervision of Vítor Jorge Pais Vilar and Ana Isabel de Emílio Gomes.

The project topic is highly relevant to Environmental Engineering and Chemical Engineering, with a strong emphasis on wastewater purification for electrolysis. The planned research includes removal of micropollutants using ozonation and a sand biofilter, production of high-purity water for alkaline electrolyzers using ozonation, biofiltration, reverse osmosis, and electrodeionization, and testing in alkaline electrolyzers to assess performance and durability.

This is a master-level research grant (not a PhD or postdoc position). Eligible applicants must either be enrolled in a doctoral program in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related areas, or hold an academic degree and be enrolled in a qualifying non-academic degree course. A master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related field is required. Foreign degrees must comply with Portuguese recognition rules.

The grant lasts 6 months initially, with a predicted start in September 2026, and may be renewed until the end of the project. The monthly stipend is between €1,359.64 and €1,459.64, depending on the candidate’s profile and experience.

Applications are open from 2026-07-31 to 2026-08-13 at 23:59 (Europe/Lisbon). To apply, email the required documents to vilar@fe.up.pt and recursoshumanos@fe.up.pt, clearly stating the reference FEUP-H2SYMBIOTIC-WATER-PURIFICATION.
