About this position
University of Évora’s HERCULES Laboratory is offering one Master-level research scholarship within the project Supply, Impact and Links of Valuable Economic Resources in the Portuguese Empire (1415–1663 AD): Exploring the Role of Silver in Shaping Commercial and Social Dynamics in the Age of Discoveries (SILVER.pt).
This opportunity is centered on Heritage Science, Archaeometry, Archaeology, Art History, and the scientific study of silver objects from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries. The successful candidate will contribute to documentary research, sample selection, analytical campaigns, data processing, statistical interpretation, database management, and the integration of scientific results with historical and archaeological evidence.

The call particularly values experience with X-ray fluorescence (XRF), ICP-MS, and MC-ICP-MS, as well as laboratory work on metallic materials, chemical and isotopic characterisation, and scientific publication output. The scholarship also requires compliance with FCT scholarship rules, including recognition of foreign degrees where applicable.
The scholarship is funded by national funds through FCT, with a monthly allowance of €1359.64. It runs for 12 months starting in October 2026, with possible renewal depending on project funding and regulations.
Applications are open from 27 July to 10 August 2026. To apply, email your application letter and supporting documents to Dr. Carlo Bottaini at carlo.bottaini@uevora.pt. The work will be carried out at the HERCULES Laboratory, University of Évora, Portugal.
