About this position

Flinders University and the Southern Oncology Clinical Research Unit (SOCRU) are offering a National Industry PhD Scholarship focused on novel treatments for gastrointestinal cancer.

The project is based at the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute and the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer, with industry collaboration through SOCRU in Bedford Park. The research will investigate the therapeutic effects of naturally derived products on gastrointestinal cancers, with translation toward Phase I clinical trials.

This PhD opportunity is designed for an aspiring researcher who wants training across cell culture, molecular biology, clinical trial design and operations, consumer engagement, and statistics. The successful candidate will spend at least 20–50% of the project with the industry partner and will also receive additional professional development through the National Industry PhD program.

Funding: fully funded scholarship valued at $53,195 per year for up to 3.5 years, including RTP base scholarship, industry partner contribution, and Australian government support. The stipend is tax-free and includes paid leave entitlements under Commonwealth Scholarship Guidelines.

Eligibility: applicants must meet PhD admission requirements and hold an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A (or equivalent) with a research component of at least 6 months full-time study and a minimum Distinction (75%). The scholarship is open to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens, and permanent residents; international students may apply but may need to pay international fees. Applicants must be able to commence by 24 August 2026.

Supervisors: Dr Jean Winter (Flinders University) and Dr Ganessan Kichenadasse (SOCRU).

Application: submit the scholarship application, and if needed also apply for Flinders HDR admission. Email your CV and covering letter to Dr Jean Winter. Shortlisting and interviews are scheduled for July 2026, with outcomes expected by August 2026.
