About this position

University of Exeter is advertising research opportunities in computational nanomaterials and nanocrystal shape control. The post includes 2 PhD studentships funded by the European Research Council under the project Kinetic Pathways to Control Nanocrystal Shapes, as well as a related postdoctoral research associate vacancy in computational nanomaterials.

The PhD project is based in the Department of Engineering, Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy, Streatham Campus, Exeter. The research focuses on non-equilibrium nanocrystal growth, crystal lattice effects, solution concentration fields, twinning, branching, and chirality. Methods include kinetic Monte Carlo simulation in C++, post-processing in Python, HPC simulations, and possible use of molecular dynamics, density functional theory, and lattice Boltzmann simulations. The successful applicant will collaborate with experimentalists and contribute to publications and conferences.

Eligibility for the PhD studentship: applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related area. An interest in mathematics and physical sciences is essential. Programming and simulation experience in C/C++ and Python is desirable, along with a background in chemical-physics, particle-based simulation methods, or statistical thermodynamics. English language proficiency is required for non-native speakers.

Funding for the PhD studentship covers Home/International tuition fees and provides an annual tax-free stipend of at least £21,805 per year for 4 years full-time, or pro rata for part-time study. The application deadline is 31 July 2026, with virtual interviews in August 2026. Applicants must submit a CV, cover letter, transcripts, and details of two referees through the university application portal.

The postdoctoral role is a fixed-term position in Exeter with a starting salary from £34,610 on Grade E, depending on experience and skill set. The post is advertised separately on the University of Exeter careers site.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.

How to apply

Please submit your application including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two references. Applications should be sent via the online portal before the deadline.
