About this position
PhD opportunity in smart water quality and safety monitoring for water distribution systems at The University of Sheffield as part of the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network i3WaterS (Intelligent, Innovative and Integrative Water Systems).
The project focuses on artificial intelligence, machine learning, graph convolutional neural networks, time-series data mining, microbial contamination, biofilms, hydraulic modelling, and water quality monitoring for drinking water distribution systems. The successful candidate will develop intelligent monitoring and predictive models that integrate microbial, environmental, and hydraulic information to detect water quality risks early and improve resilience.
Supervision is led by Dr Isabel Douterelo Soler, with co-supervision from Dr Manuel Herrera and Dr David Ayala-Cabrera, plus mentoring from a water industry expert. The wider network includes universities, research centres, technology developers, and water utilities across Europe, with training in AI/ML, explainable and trustworthy AI, knowledge representation, multi-agent systems, digital twins, innovation, scientific communication, and transferable skills.
The position includes international mobility and secondments, including training and validation at partner institutions in Ireland and Spain. Funding is provided through the MSCA Doctoral Network, with a gross annual salary of £42,702, a £5,926 mobility allowance, and possible family allowance if eligible. The contract lasts 36 months and starts on 1 January 2027.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must not hold a doctoral degree, must meet the University of Sheffield PhD entry requirements, and must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule. A relevant degree in civil/environmental engineering, environmental science, physical geography, or a related STEM field is expected. English language proficiency is required (IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 5.5 in each sub-skill, or equivalent). Experience with Python, R, urban water systems, ecological modelling, and bioinformatics is desirable.
