Southern Spars, in partnership with the University of Auckland, is advertising a PhD opportunity in advanced composite structures through the Applied Doctorates Scheme (ADS2.10): Lighter, Stronger Advanced Composites for Aerospace by Enhancing Open-Hole Compression Strength.
The project focuses on how material, manufacturing, and design parameters affect compression strength around holes, fasteners, and other local discontinuities in high-performance carbon-fibre composites. Research methods include experimental testing, failure analysis, finite element modelling, and data-driven methods to develop lighter and more reliable composite structures for aerospace, space, defence, and related high-performance applications.
The candidate will work at the University of Auckland’s Centre for Advanced Composite Materials and at Southern Spars’ Auckland facility. The scholarship is fully funded for three years, with tuition covered, an annual stipend of NZD 36,212 (increasing by 2% each year), and insurance costs covered for international students.
Eligibility highlights include a relevant engineering background, a relevant Honours or Master’s degree with at least a B+ average or University of Auckland GPE 6.0, at least 25% research in the degree, knowledge of mechanics of materials and fibre-reinforced polymer composites, and familiarity with composite analysis/design methods such as classical lamination theory and failure criteria. Experience in experimental materials testing and finite element analysis is preferred.
