About this position

CSIRO Industry PhD opportunity in circular economy transition governance for the waste management and resource recovery sector.

The project examines how circular economy strategies can improve sector performance across environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Research themes include waste avoidance, reuse and recycling, reduced dependence on virgin materials, new business opportunities, jobs and skills, and emissions reduction within a broader circular economy perspective.

A major part of the project is governance of transition processes. The student will explore the policies, programmes, market incentives, and institutional arrangements needed to support change, as well as how collaboration across government, industry, and supply chains can enable more systemic circular outcomes.

Supervisory team: Monique Retamal (University of Technology Sydney), Heinz Schandl (CSIRO), and Gayle Sloan (Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia Ltd).

Location: Primary location at the University of Technology Sydney, with industry engagement at the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia Ltd and other activities at CSIRO Black Mountain in Australia.

Ideal background: environmental science, sustainability, industrial ecology, economics, public policy, geography, planning, engineering, or related disciplines. Helpful experience includes quantitative analysis, policy analysis, systems thinking, circular economy, waste and resource recovery, sustainability transitions, and stakeholder engagement.

Application: open until position filled. Interested candidates should contact Monique Retamal by email.
