About this position
PhD opportunity at The University of Newcastle, Australia in computational genomics, equine genomics, and equine immunology. The project investigates equine health and immune biology using genomic, transcriptomic, and immune-repertoire sequencing data, with a strong emphasis on computational analysis, genome assembly/annotation, comparative genomics, and reproducible bioinformatics workflows.
This is a PhD scholarship supported by AgriFutures Australia. Funding includes a living allowance of $38,938 per annum (2026 rate), indexed annually, plus a tuition fee scholarship for 3.5 years.
The position is supervised by Dr Aleona Swegen. The opportunity is strictly limited to domestic students only, including Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, Australian humanitarian visa holders, and eligible New Zealand citizens. International students and temporary visa holders are not eligible.
Applicants should have research experience in bioinformatics or computational genomics, with skills in genome assembly analysis, annotation of complex/repetitive genomic regions, immune-receptor or V(D)J repertoire sequencing, FASTQ/BAM analysis, comparative genomics, germline gene discovery, Python and/or R, Linux/HPC, and workflow tools such as Nextflow or Snakemake. Experience with single-cell sequencing, immunogenomics, non-model organisms, incomplete genome annotations, and tools like IgBLAST, MiXCR, TRUST4, IgDiscover, or partis is desirable.
To apply, email a CV and a one-page cover letter addressing the essential expertise and eligibility requirements to [email protected]. The expression of interest is due by 5pm on 10 November 2026. The opportunity is subject to grant establishment.
