About this position

Deakin University is advertising a PhD scholarship in crop water use, water circular economy, and sustainable irrigation for high-value irrigated almonds in the Murray–Darling Basin, based in Griffith, NSW, Australia.

The project is supervised by Prof John Hornbuckle (Centre for Regional and Rural Futures, School of Life and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment). The research will quantify actual crop evapotranspiration using field-based measurements, water balance analysis, and satellite-based ET model refinement, with strong links to commercial irrigators, water providers, and compliance agencies.

Funding: three years of support including a tax-exempt stipend of AUD 37,450 per annum, a AUD 10,000 per annum top-up, relocation allowance, and for international students a tuition fee offset for four years plus single Overseas Student Health Cover.

Eligibility: applicants must meet Deakin PhD entry requirements, enrol full time, and hold a first-class honours degree or an equivalent master’s degree with a substantial research component. Extensive fieldwork is required.

How to apply: email your CV and cover letter to Prof John Hornbuckle. If successful, you will be invited to submit a formal application. Applications remain open until a candidate is appointed.
