About this position
PhD opportunity in EU Energy Law at Hasselt University, Belgium. The Faculty of Law and the research group CORe (Centre for Government and Law) are recruiting a PhD student for the interdisciplinary DINEMO project (Distribution Network Management Optimisation).
The project examines legal bottlenecks in grid management and the energy transition, with a focus on EU rules governing network tariffs and capacity management. The successful candidate will assess the current EU legal framework, compare Flemish-level choices against EU law, identify weak points and effective rules, and develop recommendations for future legal development.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a master’s degree in Law (or equivalent), show strong research motivation, and ideally demonstrate publication potential or prior scientific writing. Excellent English is required; Dutch is an advantage. The role also values independence, creativity, teamwork, and willingness to participate in teaching-skills training and the doctoral school.
Funding: This is a full-time PhD scholarship position, initially for two years and renewable once for another two years subject to positive interim assessment. The university also provides a workspace, IT equipment, and conference travel support.

Funding details
