About this position
PhD opportunity under the Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS 2026) at Monash University Malaysia in Subang Jaya, Malaysia.
The project is titled Explainable AI for Early-Onset Heart Failure Risk Stratification and sits at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cardiology, Medical Statistics, Data Science, Epidemiology, Health Informatics, and Statistics. The research will use de-identified longitudinal electronic medical record data from adults with early-onset heart failure or cardiomyopathy receiving care at Institut Jantung Negara.
The project aims to build and validate clinically interpretable risk-prediction models for outcomes such as disease progression, hospital readmission, major adverse cardiovascular events, and mortality. Methods will be benchmarked against standard regression approaches including logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models, with evaluation of discrimination, calibration, clinical utility, and transportability. A strong emphasis is placed on explainability, missing-data handling, and fairness across sex, age, and Malaysian ethnic groups.
The successful candidate will work with clinicians to identify actionable predictors and co-design a prototype risk-stratification framework suitable for future evaluation in IJN workflows. The post is suitable for students interested in AI for healthcare, predictive modeling, and clinically oriented data science.
Eligibility: applicants must hold at least First Class Honours (H1) or an equivalent qualification recognised by Monash Malaysia. The scholarship is competitive.
