About this position

PhD opportunity in Integrated Remote Sensing and Hydrological Modelling at Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II in Napoli, Italy.

This project, hosted by HydroLAB in the DICEA department and coordinated by Prof. Salvatore Manfreda, focuses on combining remote sensing, hydrological modelling, water resources, water quality, GIS, and citizen science to build an integrated framework for monitoring rivers and inland waters.

The research will use multi-source Earth observation and field data, including Copernicus Sentinel-1/2, satellite altimetry such as Sentinel-3 and SWOT, drone and camera-based observations, in situ sensing, historical records, and process-based hydrological and water quality models. The aim is to improve monitoring of water quantity and quality, support forecasting, and reduce uncertainty in water availability assessments under climate change.

Suggested preparation includes a strong background in hydrology or water resources, experience with hydrological/hydraulic modelling, calibration and uncertainty analysis, stochastic methods for extremes, and programming in Python, R, or MATLAB. Experience with GIS, remote sensing data, reanalysis products, and citizen science data is also valued.

This is a PhD scholarship/assistantship opportunity. The post states that the application deadline is 26 August 2026.
