About this position

PhD opportunity at DTU Health Tech, Technical University of Denmark (Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark) in light-activated micromotors for biomedical applications.

This PhD project sits at the interface of micro/nanotechnology, biomaterials, materials science, and biomedical engineering. The research focuses on developing near-infrared (NIR)-responsive biodegradable Janus micromotors and studying their active transport in biomimetic models of Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) tunnel architecture. The project combines micromotor design and fabrication with 3D hydrogel-based disease models to understand how propulsion and geometric confinement affect transport in complex biological environments.

Key research tasks include designing and fabricating NIR-responsive micromotors, characterizing morphology and optical/photothermal properties, evaluating propulsion in skin-relevant environments, building hydrogel models that mimic HS tunnels, and quantifying penetration, velocity, and navigation in confined channels. The work also compares active transport with passive diffusion and non-propelled controls.

Eligibility: applicants should have a two-year master's degree (or equivalent) in nanotechnology, chemistry, materials science, biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, or a closely related field. Strong experimental skills and interest in micro/nanotechnology are important; experience with particle fabrication, microscopy, microfabrication, biomaterials, hydrogel systems, light-responsive materials, or particle tracking is an advantage.

Funding and terms: this is a 3-year PhD scholarship/appointment at DTU, full-time, with salary according to the Danish collective agreement and DTU salary structure. The scholarship is subject to academic approval and enrolment in a DTU PhD programme.

Deadline: 3 November 2026. Apply online through the DTU career portal and submit one PDF containing a cover letter, CV, transcripts, diploma, grading scale description, and publication list.

Further information is available from Assistant Professor Tijana Miseljic and Professor Anja Boisen at DTU Health Tech.

What's required

Applicants must hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in nanotechnology, chemistry, materials science, biomedical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, or a closely related field. Strong interest in micro- and nanotechnology and hands-on experimental research is required. Experience with particle fabrication, functional materials, surface modification, microscopy, microfabrication, biomaterials, light-responsive or photothermal materials, micromotors, hydrogel fabrication, microfluidic systems, or quantitative particle tracking is highly desirable or an advantage. Candidates should be motivated, curious, able to work independently and collaboratively, and interested in interdisciplinary problem-solving.

How to apply

Apply online via the DTU career portal using the 'Apply now' link. Submit one PDF in English containing a motivation letter, CV, grade transcripts, BSc/MSc diploma with grading scale description, and publication list. Applications must be submitted by the deadline; you may apply before receiving the master's degree but cannot start before it is awarded.
