About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK, focused on PFAS removal from water using novel sorbent materials. The project addresses per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including legacy compounds such as PFOA and PFOS and newer PFAS alternatives, which are persistent, mobile, and bioaccumulative contaminants of major concern in drinking water, groundwater, soils, sediments, and biota.
The research builds on the Fletcher group’s work in adsorption-based remediation and aims to design and synthesise porous solid sorbents with engineered surface functionalities for capturing PFAS from contaminated water. The student will vary porous architecture and surface chemistry to study how electrostatic forces, hydrophobic interactions, and specific binding motifs affect adsorption of fluorinated chains.
This PhD sits within chemical process engineering and has potential links to CMAC and applications relevant to pharmaceutical manufacturing, polymer processing, and advanced materials production. The project will generate adsorption datasets, mechanistic understanding, and validated performance in batch and flow-through systems, with open-access publication and data deposition in the university repository.
Funding: full funding for 4 years for a UK/Home candidate, covering stipend and fees at the UK/Home rate.
Eligibility: minimum 2.1 undergraduate degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline; highly motivated applicants with interest in multidisciplinary research are encouraged to apply.
Deadline: 31 August 2026.
