ICIQ Fully-Funded PhD Programme

PhD opportunity at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ), Spain

The Escobar Group is recruiting a PhD student for research at the interface of supramolecular chemistry and chemical biology. The project focuses on the design and development of hybrid oligomers that combine synthetic and biological scaffolds, especially host-guest systems with nucleic acids and peptides. The work includes fundamental studies of structure and function, plus proof-of-principle exploration of potential biomedical applications.

This is part of the ICIQ Fully-Funded PhD Programme 2026 – Second Call, in partnership with Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV). The programme is aimed at exceptional graduate students from around the world and offers a research training environment in chemistry leading to a doctoral thesis. The broader programme includes individual research under an internationally renowned group leader, short stays in international research institutions, and complementary training in technical and soft skills.

Funding: the position is fully funded through a pre-doctoral employment contract for up to 4 years. The gross yearly salary is 19,007.22 EUR for years 1–2, 20,364.88 EUR for year 3, and 25,456.10 EUR for year 4. Full social security coverage is included.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline by enrolment. A strong academic record and solid English skills are expected. Preferred experience includes routine characterization techniques, independent and collaborative working, and strong motivation to learn new methods.
