About this position
PhD opportunity in synthetic biology and protein engineering for carbon fixation at the University of Sydney. This project is based in the School of Chemistry and is led by Assoc Prof Yu Heng Lau in the Lau research group, with collaboration from plant biology experts at the Australian National University.
The research focuses on protein engineering, synthetic biology, and carbon fixation. The aim is to develop engineered protein-based organelles that can improve the efficiency of the enzyme Rubisco. The work begins with prototyping protein designs in vitro and in E. coli, then moving the best-performing designs into plant chloroplasts. There are also broader research opportunities to engineer encapsulins and study their shape, porosity, and assembly for applications such as drug delivery and heavy-metal remediation.
This is a funded PhD opportunity. The listing states that scholarships are available and that it is a Competition Funded PhD Project open to students worldwide, subject to eligibility. Australian citizens and permanent residents may apply, and international applicants are eligible if they hold a Master degree (or equivalent) from a reputable university ranked in the top 400 worldwide.
Applicants should have a first-class undergraduate degree or equivalent high-grade Master degree in biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, or a related field. At least one year of research experience is required, or the applicant must be completing a degree that includes at least one year of research. The project is suitable for candidates interested in multidisciplinary research spanning synthetic biology, structural biology, biophysics, microbiology, and plant biology.
The post says applications are accepted all year round / always taking applicants. To apply, send your CV and academic transcripts by email and include a short statement explaining your interest. For more information, contact Assoc. Prof. Yu Heng Lau.
