About this position

SAAFE CRC and The University of Queensland are advertising a PhD opportunity in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research focused on using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) combined with artificial intelligence (AI) to detect AMR organisms in water.

The project sits at the intersection of biological sciences, environmental sciences, and health sciences. It aims to identify unique biomarkers for multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales, develop a standard scanning protocol for field testing, and build AI algorithms for rapid detection of AMR bacteria in real-world water settings. The work references culture-based methods, polymerase chain reaction, metagenomics, qPCR, genome sequencing, and data analysis.

Research will be carried out in St Lucia and Herston with access to infrared analysis tools in the School of the Environment and molecular analysis facilities at UQCCR. The project also offers opportunities to work nationally and internationally with experts in Australia and beyond.

Funding: This is supported by a Research project scholarship that includes a $45,000 per annum stipend, a $21,000 professional development package, and tuition fees covered.

Eligibility highlights: Applicants should have a working knowledge of molecular biology, sequencing, clinical bacteria, and machine learning. A background in clinical bacteria, molecular technologies, qPCR, genome sequencing, and manuscript writing is highly desirable. Candidates must have completed Honours or Masters level research and be able to enrol as a domestic student at The University of Queensland.

Supervisors: Dr Maggy Lord (School of the Environment) and Associate Professor Patrick Harris (UQ Centre for Clinical Research).
